Washington, D.C. – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) is pleased to announce the approval of the following professional development program (PDP) providers for the contract period beginning January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2030:
- The American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) in collaboration with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)
- The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in collaboration with the Society of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacists (SPPCP), the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), and the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (AAPP)
In January 2025, BPS issued a request for proposals to provide a PDP for the recertification of board-certified pain management pharmacists (BCPMPs) beginning in 2026. Interested entities submitted proposals in May 2025 and the BPS Pain Management Pharmacy Specialty Council and BPS Board of Directors conducted their review of proposals.
For specialty certifications offered by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), the purpose of recertification is to help ensure that the credential holder demonstrates a continued commitment to maintaining and further developing the competencies necessary for safe and effective practice in that specialty area. BPS complies with the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) standards on maintenance of certification. NCCA defines recertification as “requirements and procedures established as part of a certification program that certificants must meet to maintain competence and renew their certification.”

BPS anticipates that the next multi-specialty request for proposal will be issued in 2028 or 2029 for contracts beginning January 1, 2031. Any organization is welcome to submit a proposal at that time. A request for proposals for a newly BPS-recognized specialty area may be issued in the interim, and any organization may submit a proposal in response.

About the Board of Pharmacy Specialties
The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) was established in 1976 as an autonomous division of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The mission of BPS is to improve patient care by positioning BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Specialists as integral members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, through recognition and promotion of specialized training, knowledge, and skills for pharmacists in the United States and internationally. Board certification is a recognized credential for determining which pharmacists are qualified to contribute at advanced practice levels given the rigorous standards mandated by BPS board certification and recertification. As of the end of 2024, BPS recognized more than 62,250 pharmacist certifications across 15 specialties.
