BPS Seeks Pharmacists to Serve on 14 Specialty Councils with Terms Beginning in 2027

Washington D.C. – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) issues a call for applications for pharmacists to serve on one of 14 BPS Specialty Councils for a three-year term beginning in January 2027. A minimum of 40 and a maximum of 61 total council positions are available.

Prior to submitting the application, carefully review and consider the qualifications, position duties, responsibilities, and required time commitment outlined in the Call for Applications Information Booklet and all applicable BPS policies (found on this webpage).

BPS Specialty Councils are responsible for:

  • Developing standards and requirements for certification and recertification of pharmacists in the specialty area for approval by the BPS Board of Directors;
  • Participating in the examination development process by reviewing and approving examination items and assembled forms of the certification examination; and
  • Reviewing and approving professional development programs for the recertification of pharmacist specialists.

BPS must receive all the following items NO LATER THAN Monday, April 6, 2026 by 5:00 pm Eastern Time.

Desired Qualifications

The expertise, experience, and practice setting of each applicant are carefully considered to ensure balanced representation within each specialty council. While the specific needs of each council vary from year to year, applicants from all backgrounds, including those with education, training, or practice experience outside of the United States, are encouraged to apply.

BPS Specialty Councils have identified areas of need, which are outlined below for each specialty. While these needs highlight priority areas, they are not intended to discourage applications from individuals with other areas of expertise. BPS values diverse perspectives and welcomes all qualified individuals to apply.

Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to four positions: recruiting for a minimum of two BCACPs, and up to two additional BCACPs or non-BCACPs. One incumbents is eligible for reappointment.)

  • Practice Setting: Community Hospital, Community Pharmacy
  • Subspecialties: Men’s Health, Pain Management

Cardiology Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to five positions: recruiting for a minimum of four BCCPs, and up to one additional BCCP or non-BCCP. Four incumbents are eligible for reappointment.)

  • Practice Setting: Governmental Healthcare Facility, Outpatient/Ambulatory Clinic
  • Subspecialties: Pulmonary Hypertension, Transplantation

Compounded Sterile Preparations Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to six positions: recruiting for a minimum of four BCSCPs, and up to two additional BCSCPs or non-BCSCPs. Four incumbents are eligible for reappointment.)

  • Years of Practice Experience: 0-10 years
  • Practice Setting: 503a Compounding Pharmacy, 503b Compounding Pharmacy, Community Pharmacy, Governmental Healthcare Facility
  • Subspecialties: Commercial Compounding, Durable Medical Equipment, Veterinary

Critical Care Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to four positions: recruiting for a minimum of two BCCCPs, with up to two additional BCCCPs or non-BCCCPs. Four incumbents are eligible for reappointment.)

  • Practice Setting: Governmental Healthcare Facility
  • Subspecialties: Cardiothoracic/Cardiac ICU, Emergency Department, Mixed Medical/Surgical ICU

Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to six positions: recruiting for a minimum of four BCEMPs, and up to two additional BCEMPs or non-BCEMPs. Six incumbents are eligible for reappointment.)

  • Years of Practice Experience: 21+
  • Practice Setting: Drug Information/Poison Center, Free-Standing Emergency Department
  • Subspecialties: Obstetrics, Toxicology, Trauma

Geriatric Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to four positions: recruiting for a minimum of two BCGPs, and up to two additional BCGPs. Two incumbents are eligible for reappointment.)

  • Practice Setting: Community Pharmacy, Hospice, Outpatient/Ambulatory Clinic

Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to four positions: recruiting for a minimum of three BCIDPs, and up to one additional BCIDP or non-BCIDP. Two incumbents are eligible for reappointment.)

  • Subspecialty: Public Health

Nuclear Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to four positions: recruiting for a minimum of three BCNPs, and up to one additional BCNP or non-BCNP. Three incumbents are eligible for reappointment.)

  • Practice Setting: Centralized Nuclear Pharmacy: Independent Pharmacy, Governmental Healthcare Facility
  • Subspecialty: Manufacturing

Nutrition Support Pharmacy Specialty Council (Up to four positions: recruiting for a minimum of two BCNSPs, and up to two additional BCNSPs. Three incumbents are eligible for reappointment.)

About the Board of Pharmacy Specialties
The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) was established in 1976 as an autonomous division of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The mission of BPS is to improve patient care by positioning BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Specialists as integral members of interprofessional healthcare teams, through recognition and promotion of specialized training, knowledge, and skills for pharmacists in the United States and internationally. Board certification is a recognized credential for determining which pharmacists are qualified to contribute at advanced practice levels given the rigorous standards mandated by BPS board certification and recertification. As of the end of 2025, BPS recognized more than 63,400 pharmacist certifications across 16 specialties.
