Are you interested in becoming a BPS volunteer? Below is a listing of opportunities to work with BPS. 

Our subject matter experts are critical to the success of our credentialing programs and central to our mission of improving patient care by promoting the recognition and value of specialized training, knowledge, and skills in pharmacy and specialty board certification of pharmacists.

We are always looking for contributions from diverse perspectives to help us with our various examination development, governance, advisory, and communications efforts and activities.

Specialty Council Member

Main Responsibilities

  • Review and edit submitted exam items
  • Participate in the maintenance of the item bank
  • Review and approve assembled examination forms

Length of Involvement

  • 2-year term (up to three terms)

Estimated Time Commitment

  • 80-120 hours in total per year: one 2-day exam development meeting in person each year; several virtual meetings throughout the year for exam development and administrative responsibilities

Number of SMEs

  • Each specialty council may have as few as 10 or as many as 12

Eligibility

  • Hold BPS certification in that specialty area
  • (Each specialty council may, at their discretion, include up to two licensed pharmacists who do not meet the above requirement)

Restrictions

  • Participants will be ineligible to take the corresponding BPS certification or recertification exam for two (2) years after the end of their involvement.
  • Participants will also be prohibited from teaching or developing review/recertification courses or materials for a period of two (2) years after the end of their involvement.
  • Participants may not disclose or make use of BPS intellectual property in any way during or after their involvement.

    • Call for Critical Care Pharmacists (BCCCP) to participate as examination item writers. Application will be open until August 21, 2026. Click here to apply.
    • Call for Veterinary Pharmacists to participate as examination item writers. Application will be open until September 21, 2026. Click here to apply.

Item Writer

Main Responsibilities

  • Receive training on item writing for certification exams
  • Draft and submit 5 to 10 examination items

Length of Involvement

  • 3-6 months

Estimated Time Commitment

  • 2 hours of training
  • 6-20 hours of writing and submittal of items
  • (All done remotely)

Number of SMEs

  • No upper limit
  • (Each writer works individually)

Eligibility

  • Hold BPS certification in that specialty area and/or work at least 50% of time in that specialty area

Restrictions

  • Participants may not disclose or make use of BPS intellectual property in any way during or after their involvement

Job Analysis Panelist

Main Responsibilities

  • Engage in focus-group-style discussions with fellow pharmacists to develop the examination content outline
  • Pilot test and review the results of a validation survey that solicits ratings of endorsement for the examination content outline elements

Length of Involvement

  • 5-7 months

Estimated Time Commitment

  • 15-20 hours total, with 12-15 hours of meeting time and an additional 3-5 hours of additional individual contributions
  • Three or four virtual meetings, each 3-6 hours in length, with dates and times selected according to panelist responses to availability poll

Number of SMEs

  • A panel of 15 to 20 SMEs, representing the professional diversity within the specialty practice area

Eligibility

  • Hold BPS certification in that specialty area and/or work at least 50% of time in that specialty area

  • Participants may not disclose or make use of BPS intellectual property in any way during or after their involvement

    • Call for Cardiology Pharmacists (BCCP) to participate as standard setting panelists. Application will be open until September 14, 2026. Click here to apply.
    • Call for Emergency Medicine Pharmacists (BCEMP) to participate as standard setting panelists. Application will be open until September 14, 2026. Click here to apply.

Standard Setting Panelist

Main Responsibilities

  • Engage in an activity to review a representative form of an exam to set a fair and meaningful passing standard (cut-off score) for the exam

Length of Involvement

  • One meeting day

Estimated Time Commitment

  • One 7-hour virtual meeting

Number of SMEs

  • A panel of 15 to 20 SMEs, representing the professional diversity within the specialty practice area

Eligibility

  • Hold BPS certification in that specialty area and/or work at least 50% of time in that specialty area

Restrictions

  • Participants will be ineligible to take the corresponding BPS certification or recertification exam for two (2) years following the standard setting study. 
  • Participants will also be prohibited from teaching or developing review/recertification courses or materials for a period of two (2) years after their participation in the standard setting study.
  • Participants may not disclose or make use of BPS intellectual property in any way during or after their involvement.
  • Board of Directors: Applications open June 2027

  • Employer Advisory Committee: Stay tuned for updates and announcements on call for applications
  • New Practitioner Ad-Hoc Committee: Stay tuned for updates and announcements on call for applications
  • Board of Directors: Apply to serve on the BPS Board of Directors by August 3.
    (Application Deadline Extended to August 19, 2026 for Public Member position)
