BPS Announces Pain Management Pharmacy as New Specialty Certification
and Calls for Subject Matter Experts for Job Analysis Panel
Washington, D.C. – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) announces pain management pharmacy as the 15th formally recognized specialty certification program and opens application for job analysis panelists. Pain management pharmacists can submit applications for the job analysis panel here before the deadline of November 5, 2023 at 5:00pm EST.
Subject matter experts chosen to serve on the pain management pharmacy job analysis panel will develop recommendations for the examination content outline and determine the skills, knowledge, and competencies required of pharmacists practicing pain management pharmacy.

Nemire, PharmD, EdD, FCCP, FNAP, CRQM.
BPS received the petition to recognize pain management pharmacy as a specialty certification and opened the public comment period in April 2023 with this press release.
Recruitment for the inaugural pain management pharmacy specialty council and for the first cohort of examination item writers will be conducted in 2024. The pain management pharmacy specialty council will provide the BPS Board with recommendations on the credential designation, eligibility requirements, recertification criteria, specialty certification program governance, examination development, and other elements pertinent to the certification program.
More information about the pain management pharmacist board certification, including when the first examination will be delivered, will be announced at a later date.
Job Analysis Panelist Responsibilities
BPS will choose 15 to 20 subject matter experts in pain management pharmacy to serve on the job analysis panel. Panelists will participate in around 15 to 20 hours of virtual focus group discussion across 4 to 6 months.
Job analysis panelists are responsible for:
- Establishing the scope of the pain management pharmacy specialty practice area.
- Identifying the tasks performed by practitioners in pain management pharmacy.
- Identifying the competencies required by practitioners in pain management pharmacy.
Completing this job analysis will ensure that item writers and candidates are working from the most up to date information on this specialty area.
