BPS Receives 2023 Innovator Award from The Institute of Credentialing Excellence
Washington, D.C. – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) is proud to receive the 2023 Innovator Award from the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (I.C.E.) in recognition of the BPS Executive Residency Program.
The I.C.E. Innovator Award is a yearly award that recognizes an individual or organization that has created an innovative approach to credentialing success that can be influential and replicable to other individuals or organizations. BPS accepted the 2023 Innovator Award at the 2023 I.C.E. Exchange in Colorado Springs, CO.
“BPS is honored to receive this award in recognition of our executive residency program. As a credentialing organization, we deeply value learning and professional development. The BPS Executive Residency Program annually trains one pharmacist graduate in principles of association management and professional certification,” said BPS Executive Director, William M. Ellis, MS, RPh, ICE-CCP.
I.C.E. is a professional membership association that serves the organizations and individuals of the credentialing industry, both developing standards for certification and certificate programs and highlighting best practices for trends in certification. I.C.E. also enforces standards of excellence for certification programs with the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
The BPS Executive Residency is facilitated in partnership with the postgraduate training programs of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The program is designed to challenge motivated pharmacists who have ambitions to contribute towards advancement of the pharmacy profession. The residents and fellow work on high impact projects, representing APhA’s members and developing their leadership skills alongside many pharmacy leaders during their one-year term with the association.
The BPS residency training experience provides a unique opportunity to gain insight into the purpose, impact, and value of certification. Residents are exposed to high-priority issues within the professional pharmacy landscape from the perspective of a certification agency, with a focus on specialization and advanced practice in the U.S. and around the globe.

About the Board of Pharmacy Specialties
The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) was established in 1976 as an autonomous division of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The mission of BPS is to improve patient care by positioning BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Specialists as integral members of interprofessional healthcare teams, through recognition and promotion of specialized training, knowledge, and skills for pharmacists in the United States and internationally. Board certification is a recognized credential for determining which pharmacists are qualified to contribute at advanced practice levels given the rigorous standards mandated by BPS board certification and recertification. BPS currently recognizes more than 58,800 active pharmacist certifications across 15 specialties.
