When do I pay the annual maintenance fee?

Board-certified pharmacists are required to pay a $125 annual maintenance fee during years 1-6 of their recertification cycle. If a certificant is granted an extension year, they must pay the $125 USD annual certification maintenance fee in year 8 (the extension year).

A payment notification will be sent to each certificant via email annually in May (including in year 1).

What are my annual certification maintenance and recertification fees going towards?

The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) collects fees related to the following: certification applications, maintenance of certification, and recertification applications. These fees support the BPS mission by funding the critical infrastructure and operations necessary to uphold the high standard of pharmacist board certification and ensure that board certification remains a credible, professionally meaningful, and globally recognized credential.

Collected fees support the ongoing development of examination content for each certification program to ensure the relevancy, validity, and defensibility of each BPS Certification. Fees are also used to maintain an office space in Washington, D.C., employ dedicated customer support representatives and staff, and facilitate examination delivery globally. Tools such as the BPS Website, the Find a Board-Certified Pharmacist Database, and the MyBPS platform are maintained through this funding, alongside the engagement of subject matter expert volunteers, specialty council members, professional committees, and the BPS Board of Directors.

Fees support essential legislative and regulatory work that protects and promotes the value of certification. Additionally, collected fees are used to fund the BPS Research Seed Grant and BPS and FIP Foundation Research Grant which support investigator’s research into BPS Board Certification in the U.S. and internationally.

Do I pay an annual fee during my recertification year?

Board certified pharmacists who are due to recertify do not pay the annual maintenance fee in their recertification year. This includes candidates who hold two or more BPS certifications. Instead, pharmacists due to recertify should submit the recertification application and pay the recertification fee.

I have multiple certifications. Do I pay an annual maintenance fee for each specialty?

No, pharmacists holding more than one BPS certification are assessed only one annual fee.

If you delist a credential in a recertification year but wish to maintain other credential(s), you will be assessed the annual certification maintenance fee.

Why isn’t my name on the Board-Certified Pharmacist search?

An individual’s name is removed from the Find a Board-Certified Pharmacist roster if their certification is in withdrawn status or the certification may have
expired due to incomplete recertification requirements.

BPS defines withdrawn status as: the certificant did not meet annual CPE/CPD requirements, did not pay outstanding fees, did not maintain licensure, and/or did not comply with the BPS ethics and professionalism policy, leading to withdrawal of the certification (i.e., inactivated, rescinded). The former credential holder may no longer identify as board certified.

If my certification status is Activity Pending or Suspended, how do I restore it to Active status?

and/or

For annual CPE/CPD requirements: To rectify the situation, complete all outstanding CPE/CPD requirements. Once these activities are reflected in your MyBPS profile, your certification status will appear as “Active” on the board-certified pharmacist search within 72 hours.
