Washington, D.C. – Earlier this year, the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) issued a call for applications for PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency Research Grants and was pleased to receive many outstanding applications.
BPS Board Chair, Andrea Iannucci, Pharm.D., BCOP, noted: “It is a distinct pleasure to review all of the proposals and recognize these outstanding researchers. This is a terrific opportunity for BPS to collaborate with others in the pharmacy profession to learn more about the value of BPS board certification.”
BPS Associate Executive Director, Samuel Johnson, Pharm.D., BCPS, stated: “Part of the mission of BPS is to collaborate with stakeholders to establish and document value and impact of board certification, and these proposals clearly embody that approach.”
BPS Proudly announces the 2018 grantees:
- Julie Dopheide, Pharm.D., BCPP, FASHP and Fay Goldenshteyn, Pharm.D., from the University of Southern California (USC) School of Pharmacy in Los Angeles, CA.
- Drayton Hammond, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCCCP, and Edith Liang, Pharm.D., from the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.
The proposal submitted by Drs. Dopheide and Goldenshteyn is titled: Assessment of the perceived value of board certification among employers of pharmacists.
In their proposal they wrote: “The purpose of this project is to evaluate if BPS certification is a sought-after credential by employers. In addition, the project aims to ascertain the reasoning behind employer preferences for hiring BPS certified pharmacists. Pharmacy job postings from major pharmacy associations and career websites will be screened to assess existing demand for BPS certification. A brief questionnaire will be utilized to assess the reasons employers either require or prefer BPS certification.”
The proposal submitted by Drs. Hammond and Liang is titled: Association of board certification with acceptance of, and cost avoidance from, clinical pharmacy services in the ICU and ED.
In their proposal they wrote: “The objective of this current research is to determine if board certification is associated with acceptance of and cost avoidance from clinical pharmacy services in the ICU and ED. We hypothesize board-certified clinical pharmacists providing care for patients in the ICU and ED will generate greater cost avoidance than non-board-certified clinical pharmacists through accepted recommendations to non-pharmacist healthcare professionals and that pharmacist (e.g., personality, training), practice (e.g., practice model, location), and temporal (e.g., time of day and week, call-status, transitions of care) characteristics will be associated with greater cost avoidance.”
