More than 60,000 pharmacist board certifications recognized

Washington, D.C. – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) the premier post-licensure certification organization serving the pharmacy profession, announced the results of the August/September 2023 certification and recertification examination administration window.

In this administration window, a total of 2,114 out of 3,284 examinees were successful in one of the eleven certification examinations and seven recertification examinations offered. Results for BCCP, BCNP, BCOP, and BCPP certification and recertification examinations administered through the continuously available modality will be available in January 2024.

“We are happy to welcome the 1,940 new board-certified pharmacists into the community of over 60,000 active pharmacist certifications! The growth of board certification demonstrates the important role pharmacists play in diverse practice settings, and we look forward to these board-certified pharmacists using their specialized knowledge to support patient care,” said BPS Executive Director, William M. Ellis, MS, RPh, ICE-CCP.

Recertification examinations were not offered in the following specialties, as the initial cohort of certificants have not yet reached year 7 in their certification cycle: cardiology pharmacy (BCCP), compounded sterile preparations pharmacy (BCSCP), infectious diseases pharmacy (BCIDP), solid organ transplantation pharmacy (BCTXP), and emergency medicine pharmacy (BCEMP). Recertification examinations will begin in 2025 for BCCP and BCIDP, 2026 for BCSCP, 2028 for BCTXP, and 2030 for BCEMP.

The results for each examination program are provided below and are organized by the breakdown of total exam candidates (inclusive of first-time and repeat attempts) followed by first-time attempt candidates.

About the Board of Pharmacy Specialties

The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) was established in 1976 as an autonomous division of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The mission of BPS is to improve patient care by positioning BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Specialists as integral members of interprofessional healthcare teams, through recognition and promotion of specialized training, knowledge, and skills for pharmacists in the United States and internationally. Board certification is a recognized credential for determining which pharmacists are qualified to contribute at advanced practice levels given the rigorous standards mandated by BPS board certification and recertification. BPS currently recognizes more than 60,700 active pharmacist certifications across 15 specialties.
