Washington D.C. – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), the premier post-licensure pharmacist certification agency, announces open recruitment for the position of Executive Director, BPS. Previous BPS Executive Director, William M. Ellis, retired in January 2025.

BPS was established in 1976 as an autonomous division of APhA and is responsible for developing effective certification programs for specialty practices in pharmacy. BPS currently recognizes 15 distinct specialties and more than 60,900 active pharmacist certifications both nationally and internationally.
The Executive Director of BPS will be a forward-thinking leader with a strong ability to balance strategic priorities with day-to-day operational responsibilities in order to solidify BPS’ position as a high-quality credentialing agency. This position will work closely with the BPS Board of Directors to shape the strategic direction and initiatives and prioritize financial and operational strength, internal and external collaborations and build awareness while marketing the value of specialty recognition and certification.
The Executive Director will develop and implement strategic and operational goals to the organization’s mission, identifying challenges and opportunities and translating these into actionable plans for growth and innovation. Serving as the Secretary for the BPS Board of Directors, the Executive Director will develop board meeting agendas, identify new areas of involvement for the board and implement decisions/policy of the board.

The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) was established in 1976 as an autonomous division of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The mission of BPS is to improve patient care by positioning BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Specialists as integral members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, through recognition and promotion of specialized training, knowledge, and skills for pharmacists in the United States and internationally. Board certification is a recognized credential for determining which pharmacists are qualified to contribute at advanced practice levels given the rigorous standards mandated by BPS board certification and recertification. BPS has currently issued more than 62,250 certifications held by pharmacists across 15 specialties.
